IMDB rating: 7.80 Plot: Lt. John Dunbar is dubbed a hero after he accidentally leads Union troops to a victory during the Civil War. Biggest oscar upsets?
What do you think are the biggest upsets over the Academy Award for Best Picture. In other words, whats a time you thought one movie deserfed it and then an inferior movie won.
I haven’t seen every Best picture Winner or best picture nominee, so if I don’t include one that you have, it may be because i haven’t seen either movie. (i.e. I haven’t seen Goodfellas or Dances with Wolves)
Unforgiven over Scent of a Woman (I LOVE Unforgiven. It is one of my favorites but theres one movie that I thought was better)

Salacious Crumb - You are totally right. Shakespeare in love weas good and the acting was good and the screenplay was brilliant, but Saving Private is a trulytop-notch wonderful, powerful film.

i think LA Confidential should’ve won over Titanic - even though titanic made the most money, the acting, the writing, the direction were all better in LA Confidential.
And, I know you specifically asked about best picture awards, but I still can’t believe Judi dench won best supporting actress for Shakespeare in Love…she was on screen less than 10 minutes….c’mon!!!

My biggest upset is that Pan’s Labyrinth one best picture in 2006, I believe. I thought that movie was terribly overrated. It was an intriguing picture, but I thought it was tediously paced and not evolving. It was an original film, I’ll give it that. Albeit, it was executed weakly.

I must say the 1991 Academy Awards when "The Silence of the Lambs" won over "JFK"! I mean, come on a scary movie over a biographical drama? Jesus!
Also, the 1941 Academy Awards when "How Green was My Valley" won over "Citizen Kane". "Citizen Kane" is my favorite film in the universe and another film won over it?! My God!
